US Federal Building Renovation
Sacramento, California

The firm was commissioned to renovate four buildings in an aging federal building complex. The project progressed through three phases: structural seismic upgrading, retrofitting or installing interior systems, and creating tenant space modifications to each structure. When work began, the GSA’s goals were prioritized due to budget constraints, with seismic strengthening at the top of the list.
Of the $10 million allocated in the budget for seismic strengthening, only $4 million was required, with the remaining $6 million applied toward an ambitious mechanical renovation scheme for the complex. Another GSA goal was to upgrade the interiors of the building to relieve their outdated "bowling alley" appearance and create a more welcoming environment. Unger’s architectural and space planning expertise has yielded colorful interiors with rounded corners, understandable signage for tenants and visitors alike, and creative use of natural light. Swing space was designed for fifteen different agencies to provide work areas during construction.
